The Amazing Story of the Burton Inn

Check out this great interview with Deborah Kohler, who tells the amazing story of how she came to own the Burton Inn, and found the restaurant Lucy’s Table.

Today, I interviewed Deborah Kohler from the Burton Inn at her beautiful space on Vashon Island. She bought the inn last year and started a restaurant called Lucy’s Table. Deborah is a graduate of culinary school, and her food is fabulous. Check out the interview!

Aaron: Tell me about how you came to buy the inn, and how Lucy’s Table came about.

I was a mortgage banker for over 30 years. I started when I was in my late teens and early 20s as a receptionist and had a beautiful, lovely, and wonderful career in the San Francisco Bay area. In 2006, some things started happening in the industry that I wasn’t supportive of, so I sold my home in the San Francisco Bay area and moved to Southern California, where I went to culinary school.

It was time to do something different, and it was an aw ...

The True Story of a Local Artisan's Journey in Brewing

Today I’m excited to be joined by a special guest, Cliff Goodman. Cliff is the proprietor of Vashon Brewing. He’s a great businessman and an even better brewer, so I wanted to take a chance to talk with him about what he does, how he got started, and his future plans.

Cliff got started homebrewing decades ago, doing it on and off for years. About seven years ago, his wife asked if he would be interested in selling some of his beer at an auction she was helping to host. He agreed, and his beer sold very well.

A lot of people told him afterwards that they were disappointed about not being able to try his beer, since it sold out so quickly. On top of that, the people who did win the beer absolutely loved it.

"I encourage you to attend the Vashon Brewing Community Pub Preview Party. Click here to RSVP."

At that time, Cliff was ready for a change in his career. He had a degree in business administration and had been working as an accountant in S ...

Is Seattle in a Bubble? Part II

This is a continuation of my last video, where we just scratch the surface of what’s going on with our real estate market.

Welcome to Part II of “Are We in a Real Estate Bubble?”. This is a continuation of my last video, where we just scratch the surface of what’s going on with our real estate market. Today, we’re going to dig a little deeper. You’ll have to bear with me for this video- it’s a bit longer. That’s how it is.

Before I really dig deep, I should let you know that my previous caveat still holds true. If you’re looking for “The Answer”, you’re not going to find it. There is no straight answer to this question, and it’s a mistake to believe that there is one. You’re not going to know if and when we’re at a peak in our market. You’re never going to know because it’s not possible to know. The only thing that you can be confident in is that you don’t know- and tha ...

Is Our Seattle Market in a Bubble?

Nobody knows whether our Seattle market is in a bubble because that kind of thing is impossible to know.

This is Part I of a two-part series. To check out Part II, click here.

Are we in a bubble? Will prices be coming down in our market soon?

In reality: I don’t know. The truth is, nobody knows. We’d all be better off if we didn’t have to answer this question because nobody really knows the answer. As famed economist and diplomat John Kenneth Galbraith once said, “The only purpose economic forecasting has is to make astrology look respectable.”

You’re not going to know if and when we’re at a peak in our market. You’re never going to know because it’s not possible to know.

I was on my annual ski trip this past winter with some friends when, as luck would have it, I got a chance to speak to a retired economist from the Federal Reserve about this subject. As a Realtor, I thought this was a g ...

What’s Growing at the Vashon Island Farmers Market

I recently had the privilege of interviewing the Market Manager at the Vashon Island Growers Association, Caleb Johns.

During our interview, Caleb began by telling me about the history of The Vashon Island Growers Association, and how he became involved.

The Vashon Island Growers Association (VIGA) began in the 1980s as a small farmers market. By the 1990’s, it grew so much that it needed a new location. After 27 years, VIGA still stands at The Vashon Village Green and continues to flourish.

Caleb’s journey with The Vashon Island Growers Association began eight years ago, after moving back to the island. As intriguing as the position was at the time, he’ll admit that he wasn’t quite ready to take on such a big role. When the position reopened four years later, Caleb knew the time had come, and after a short conversation with the President of VIGA, he was absolutely convinced.

He then goes on the explain that The Vashon Island ...
